Iveco delivers 47 electric midi-buses to Sardinia

The Italian public transport operator CTM Cagliari has received 47 units of the new electric Iveco E-Way - each being 10.7 meters long, making these vehicles midi-buses. The e-buses were procured under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).

The new electric buses are now operating on the heavily used urban routes 8, 20, 30R, and 1Q in Cagliari, a port city in southern Sardinia and the island’s capital. The operator argues that, at 10.7 metres in length and 2.33 metres in width, the Iveco E-Way is highly manouevrable in its midi-bus configuration on hard-to-access routes, particularly in narrow city centre streets – and therefore well-suited to Cagliari’s operational needs. City authorities state that the new e-buses are equipped with NMC batteries, each with a total capacity of 350kWh, enabling a range of up to 350km on a single charge.

With the arrival of the 47 Iveco e-buses, CTM Cagliari has now completed its procurement campaign under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and concluded the city’s largest fleet renewal project to date. The entire investment programme amounts to approximately €92 million, with these funds allocated to CTM to support its ecological transition.

Thanks to this funding, CTM Cagliari has now achieved a 70 per cent electric share in its bus fleet and aims to operate only zero-emission vehicles by 2030 – well ahead of the deadlines set by the European Union, as emphasised by the city authorities.

CTM Cagliari’s fleet now comprises a total of 236 e-buses. We last reported on the order of 98 e-buses from the Polish manufacturer Solaris three years ago. Looking ahead, the city of Cagliari and CTM hope to further improve the bus system’s quality, increase travel distances, and strengthen connections. The ultimate goal is to extend CTM’s services to previously underserved municipalities in the hinterland, in close collaboration with the wider Sardinia region as part of upcoming public transport reforms.
