After BYD had recently turned into one of the biggest makers of medical face masks and disinfections in China, Tesla, General Motors and Ford now offered to convert their production in the USA to manufacture urgently needed medical equipment such as respirators.
The solidarity shown by the EV manufacturers goes quite a bit beyond the environmental impact their work is already geared towards, as the life-saving technologies they are producing are keeping people alive more directly. Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded in a typically direct manner as well, explaining that the technical possibilities were indeed there, but coordination was important: “Tesla makes cars with sophisticated HVAC systems. SpaceX makes spacecraft with life support systems. Ventilators are not difficult, but cannot be produced instantly. Which hospitals have these shortages you speak of right now?”
