Volkswagen ID.4 reservations open this September in US

Local media reports Volkswagen’s decision to move ahead on the US market. The $500 deposit for pre-order will count towards the purchase. The ID.4 sale is to begin in selected US states such as California and will gradually be extended to the entire country in 2021, according to these sources.

As reported, the series production of Volkswagen’s second model based on the Modular E-Drive Kit (MEB) in Europe launched in Zwickau a few days ago – a month before the official presentation set for late September.

For the US, the volume of ID.4 units is still under negotiation. VW will ship the e-SUV from Germany to North America first before local production starts at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga in 2022. Preparations are already underway there. The same applies to China: pre-series production at the Anting plant already began in November 2019. The ID.4 will hence come to Europe, China and the USA.

Only information on Volkswagen’s second MEB model is still scarce. In an online presentation in March, Volkswagen made the name of the compact SUV public, when the ID.Crozz became ID.4 to follow the ID.3. Volkswagen also claimed a range of 500 kilometres at the occasion, and we are waiting to hear more on the 23 September. Just as a comparison, the ID.3 can travel up to 550 kilometres with the same 77-kWh battery – the 50-kilometre difference is due to the expected higher weight and increased air resistance of the ID.4 SUV body. Also in contrast to the ID.3, which is only available with rear-wheel drive at the moment, the ID.4 will feature a four-wheel-drive eventually. However, VW has not given a date for the 4WD version or its designation so that the first ID.4 electric cars will likely have to make do with the rear-wheel drive.

Update 29 August 2020: Volkswagen officially confirms the start of ID.4 sales in the US. Reservations will open 23 September, immediately after the presentation of the series model.

Meanwhile, customers are about to receive their first edition ID.3. VW says they shipped 700 of the flagship electric car to Norway., (update 29 August)
