Order for 25 Kenworth e-trucks for Los Angeles

US manufacturer Kenworth has just announced its largest electric truck order to date. Jack Khudikyan, owner of the logistics companies AJR Trucking and MDB Transportation, has ordered 25 electric trucks from Kenworth.

The trucks now on order are 15 Kenworth T680E and ten Kenworth K270E. AJR Trucking, a contractor of the United States Postal Service, will use the K270Es for mail deliveries in the Los Angeles area. The T680Es will be used by MDB Transportation at the Port of Los Angeles.

“This is a significant milestone for Kenworth, AJR Trucking, and MDB Transportation,” said Kevin Baney, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president. “We take pride in Jack’s commitment to invest in Kenworth’s battery-electric models and be an early adopter of this new technology.”

The price of the new Kenworth T680E and K270E battery electric vehicles was offset by government support with voucher incentives through the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP).

Kenworth is already participating in the decarbonisation of trucking activities in the Port of Los Angeles. The Port is now deploying five new hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and the opening of two hydrogen fueling stations with partners that include Toyota, Kenworth Trucks and Shell.

The Port of Los Angeles has been the focus of attempts at reducing emissions as numerous zero-emission trucking projects kick into action. Last year, Nikola announced it would be participating in trials for both fully battery-electric as well as hydrogen fuel cell trucks. Just last month, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Calstart received $13 million from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to “jump-start” a high-power charging (HPC) corridor for medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks in California – namely to help decarbonise the vast amount of trucking from the port to the rest of the state and connecting to the rest of the country.
