Foton writes its largest overseas order to date in Chile

Commercial vehicle manufacturer Foton announces a significant order for electric city buses from Chile. The capital of Santiago de Chile expects 1,022 zero-emission buses to arrive, making this the biggest overseas order the Chinese company has ever had.

At the same time, Foton is no stranger to Chile. There are more than 300 Foton e-buses in operation across the country. The new order, worth 1.6b RMB (about €230m) to Foton, is the largest to date outside China after an order for 1,000 e-buses from India in 2020.

Foton has not provided information on the technology or the type of buses in the announcement. The picture reveals a single-deck bus likely measuring about 10 – 12 metres entering a large vessel.

After the delivery, the Foton electric bus fleet will form the biggest in Latin America, so the company. Santiago de Chile also already has many e-buses from BYD and Yutong.

The background to this string of major acquisitions is a new quality standard for urban transport that the Chilean Ministry of Transport introduced in late 2018. The country’s operators started purchasing purely electric or diesel six vehicles as a result.

Chile aims to have its entire public transport network decarbonised before 2040.

Foton has been a member of the ZEBRA project since the beginning of 2021. The initiative accelerates the rollout of electric buses in Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Columbia. The International Council on Clean Transport (ICCT) and C40 Cities Network launched the project with over one billion dollars budget to put over 3,000 electric city buses in service.
