Osprey high-power charging coming to British Garden Centres

British Garden Centres have selected British charge point operator Osprey Charging to provide ultra-rapid EV charging (150 kW) at its UK stores. Twelve high-power charging hubs are confirmed, with sizes varying on each site.

The British Garden Centre in Carmarthen, Wales, will be the first to offer Osprey fast-charging with a hub comprising eight ultra-rapid chargers. The Carmarthen hub will be followed by high-power hubs planned in Wimborne (Dorset), Carr Gate (Yorkshire), Braintree (Essex) and Harrow (London).

According to Osprey, eleven other sites are confirmed with a mix of these larger hubs and some smaller installations, depending on the size of the site and availability of power. The company has not disclosed the total number of chargers to be installed, but there could be more in future.

A family-owned company for over 40 years, British Garden Centres is reviewing its entire estate to bring Osprey’s charging technology to all of its centres across the UK over the next few years.

Osprey’s rapid chargers can add 100 miles in range to an EV in 20-30min. This fits the garden centre dwell time perfectly, so Osprey, and allows customers to enjoy their recharge in a relaxing and comfortable environment.

The deal appears similar to an agreement Osprey, formerly Engenie, made with real estate company, Ediston in February. The companies want to install rapid EV charging across Edistons’ retail warehouse sites in the UK. Clients include brands such as Aldi, The Food Warehouse and Costa.

The company usually covers all costs associated with installing and servicing the rapid charging points while sharing the profits, minimising financial risk for the partners. However, Osprey has not disclosed financial details concerning the agreement with British Garden Centres.

Osprey plans to roll out 150 high-power EV charging hubs by 2024 as part of a £75 million (over €81 m) investment programme in the UK. The company is mostly using HPC columns by Tritium, as reported.
