Valmet completes first pre-production Lightyear 0 model

Valmet Automotive has now completed the first pre-production vehicle of the Lightyear 0 long-range solar car at its plant in Uusikaupunki, Finland. The pre-series is an important step in the planned start of production of the customer vehicles by the end of 2022.

Lightyear unveiled the final design for the Lightyear 0 model in June, and Valmet was designated as the contract manufacturer for the production model back in July 2021. According to Valmet, “after an intensive training and familiarisation phase”, the very first vehicle to meet this specification has now been completed at the Uusikaupunki plant.

Like all pre-production vehicles, the one now built was produced in a special production area for prototypes and pre-production models, i.e. not yet on the final assembly lines for series production. Valmet says that the work to set up the assembly line for the production of the Lightyear 0 customer models is on schedule. The assembly line will be equipped “with state-of-the-art manufacturing technology”, including a collaborative robot for laser welding.

“We are immensely proud at Valmet Automotive to have completed the first pre-production Lightyear 0 solar electric vehicle. This is an important step toward the start of customer car production and making an automotive dream come true,” says Pasi Rannus, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing, Valmet Automotive.
