TCS buys stake in Sun2Wheel

The Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) has acquired a 20 per cent stake in the Swiss startup Sun2Wheel. According to the largest mobility club in Switzerland, it wants to expand its involvement in electric mobility. Details of the transaction were not disclosed.

TCS says it wants to participate in further developing bidirectional charging and storage solutions that the Swiss startup specializes in. Sun2Wheel was founded in 2020 and wants to establish bidirectional charging as a standard. Bidirectional charging enables electric vehicles to serve as mobile storage units, that can not only draw energy from the grid or from solar power at home, but can also act as a buffer for grids when demand is high, or power a home in a blackout.

“TCS has supported its members in electric mobility for several years and is, therefore, the ideal partner for this new bidirectional charging technology,” says Marco Piffaretti, founder and Chairman of the Board of Sun2Wheel.

The young company has been able to test its technology since last year as part of the V2X Suisse project. The project is looking at how 50 Honda e can be used to store energy, increase grid stability and close electricity gaps across Switzerland.
