Xpeng officially presents the G6 electric SUV

The Chinese electric car manufacturer Xpeng has presented its fifth model, the G6, at Auto China in Shanghai. For the premiere, the company does not spare superlatives – and hints that the Model Y competitor will probably not only be available in China.

The coupé-like electric SUV, which is intended to rival the Tesla Model Y only among others, is the first Xpeng model based on the new 800-volt SEPA 2.0 platform, which the company presented one day before Auto China. Xpeng promises ranges of up to 755 kilometres (according to Chinese standards) for the G6 and a charging speed of ten minutes for 300 kilometres of range.

“This groundbreaking model is expected to set new standards in the mid-size BEV SUV segment for intelligent superiority, reliable range, excellent handling and physical comfort,” the company writes.

The battery is integrated directly into the body. Xpeng does not mention concrete key data on the drive power and battery capacity in its announcement but these had already been leaked in March.

Two single-motor versions with 218 kW power (one with LFP and one with NMC batteries) and an all-wheel-drive version with an additional 140 kW motor and NMC batteries will be offered. Prices are expected to be between 200,000 and 250,000 yuan, the equivalent of around 27,000 to 34,000 euros. This is according to the registration application with the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) published in March.

“G6 is born intelligent, conceived through XPeng’s technological ingenuity and relentless innovation to continuously set new industry standards in the era of smartification,” said He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO of Xpeng. “We aspire to redefine the mobility experience of a broad customer base with streamlined configurations, outstanding performance, a unified immersive product experience and efficient development iterations.”

The G6 comes in at 4.75 metres in length, 1.92 metres in width and 1.65 metres in height. The wheelbase is given as 2,890 mm. This makes the model almost exactly the same dimensions as the Tesla Model Y, which is only 2.5 centimetres lower.

It is not yet clear when the new model will be available, but Xpeng specifies that the G6 name is for the Chinese market only, thus implying that the battery-electric car could hit the road elsewhere.

Update 09 June 2023

Xpeng has started pre-sales of its G6 model in China. The (still provisional) prices are now also known: The base price starts at 225,000 yuan (around 29,000 euros), 38,900 yuan (around 5,000 euros) lower than that of the main competitor Tesla Model Y. The official market launch of the coupé-like electric SUV with 800-volt technology is to take place this month and deliveries are to begin in July. At the presentation of the model, Xpeng emphasised, as mentioned above, that the name G6 only applies to the Chinese market – implying that the electric car will also be offered in other countries.

Sounds great. It will have to be 20% cheaper than a model Y when it arrives in Europe for it to sell in volume. Also I would love to see a Chinese car with class leading boot/trunk space. When we travel as a family we often pack camping gear or cycling gear etc. A model Y has 850litres boot. Most Chinese competitors seem to have 500litres or smaller!
