Lightning eMotors starts producing Lightning ZEV4 platform

GM associate Lightning eMotors kicked off production of its next generation GM-based Lightning ZEV4 work trucks. According to the company, the platform’s versatility will accelerate fleet vehicle electrification efforts.

“Success in the commercial vehicle electrification market frequently revolves around providing customised products to meet the specific use cases of customers. This is where we have carved our niche”, says Lightning eMotors CEO Tim Reeser.

The EV model is available in several variants, i.e. as a box truck, stake bed truck or cargo delivery vehicle. It can even be used for shuttles and school buses, says Lightning.

No matter the vehicle application, all of them feature a 120 kWh batter in the frame rails. The EVs can go up to 130 miles on one charge and deliver 241 hp. They are capable of AC and 80 kW DC charging.

“There has never been a better time for Class 4 work truck operators to upgrade their fleets to zero-emission vehicle technology”, says Lightning eMotors CRO Kash Sethi. “Aggressive funding programs – many of which can be stacked to optimise both purchase subsidies and tax incentives – combined with advanced data tracking and insights capabilities and the reliability and proven performance of our GM-based Lightning ZEV4 create a near-perfect environment for operators to act.” He is referring to incentives on a federal level in the US and Canada. Some US states, such as California and New York, offer additional financial support.

GM and Lightning started working together at the beginning of last year, just weeks after Lightning presented its own chassis for electric commercial vehicles.
