Vitesco develops power module for the automotive industry

The German powertrain supplier Vitesco Technologies has developed a power module manufactured using the transfer moulding process. The power module is to be delivered to a global car manufacturer as early as mid-2025.

The new power module consists of three overmold half-bridges and is intended to form “the core” of the power electronics for controlling drive energy and recuperation in electric vehicles. “The overmold power modules now combine highly efficient state-of-the art silicon carbide (SiC) chip technology with overmolding to facilitate a particularly robust product with increased power density, lower cost and reduced weight,” the press release says.

“These power modules are a good example of our strategic approach of using the scalability and modularity of our power electronics to develop and manufacture submodules in addition to the complete electronics,” said Thomas Stierle, board member and head of the Electrification Solutions Division at Vitesco Technologies. “Combined with our extensive overmolding expertise, we can deliver an extremely robust product to our customers. This is yet another example of how we successfully transfer proven technology to an electrification product.”

During the transfer moulding process, the power electronics are sealed under a dielectric material, which, according to Vitesco, “protects the components extremely well”. The drive supplier has already been using the process since 2020, initially for compact transmission control units.

The power module is manufactured at the Nuremberg site, as the necessary competencies and experience, “as well as the focus on electronics and e-mobility required for the power modules” are available there. In addition, the Nuremberg electronics plant is to be expanded into the “plant of the future” in order to maintain international competitiveness.

Who the “major global customer” is to whom the power module will be delivered from mid-2025, Vitesco does not specify. However, this is normal in the supplier industry.
