According to information from motor.es, the Volvo ES90 will be based on the SPA2 platform and come with one or two electric motors. The battery will be rated at 111 kWh gross or 107 kWh net, allowing for a range of more than 600 kilometres.

The electric version will be slightly larger than its ICE counterpart. It will measure 4,999 mm in length, while the S90 is 4,963 mm long. The EV will be 1,945 mm wide and 1,547 mm high and have a wheelbase of 3,102 mm. The S90 measures 1,879 mm in width and 1,443 mm in height. Its wheelbase is 2,941 mm.

The all-wheel drive version of the ES90 tips the scales at 2600 kilograms. And the single-engine variant is said to weigh 2.5 tonnes.

Internally, the project goes by the name V551. Whether the finished car will be called ES90 is not set in stone, but it is likely. Either way, the EV will be available in China and Europe. The focus, however, will be on other markets, like the US.

In February 2023, we learned that Volvo also intends to offer its S60 and S90 saloon models in all-electric form and thus expand its range of new electric vehicles to six models by 2026. So far, Volvo’s S60, XC60, S90 and XC90 models (as well as the V60 and V90 station wagon models with an uncertain electric future) are based on Volvo’s SPA platform. The new EX90 and the Polestar 3 will sit on the SPA2 platform specially developed for BEV vehicles.

According to motor.es, the new electric Volvo will go into production as early as May 2024. The carmaker will then hand over the first units to customers in mid-2025.
