In a new round of funding, the US government has awarded a total of almost one billion dollars to 67 applicants for the procurement of "clean" school buses and their infrastructure.

The funds will be used to subsidise the purchase of around 2,700 buses in 280 school districts in 37 states, 95 per cent of which will be electric buses. In April 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced at least 400 million dollars for “clean” school buses in 2023. Due to high demand, this sum has been more than doubled to the 965 million dollars now awarded. The EPA is still accepting applications for the Clean School Bus Rebate Program 2023 until 31 January 2024. In total, the Clean School Bus Programme has so far awarded almost 2 billion US dollars and financed around 5,000 electric and low-emission school buses across the country.

Including this funding announcement, the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program has awarded nearly $2 billion and funded approximately 5,000 electric and low-emission school buses nationwide so far.

Towards the end of 2022, the EPA also made efforts on a federal level to increase the number of electric school buses in operation. At the time, the EPA doubled the available funding for electric school buses to a total of $965 million.

“Every school day, 25 million children ride our nation’s largest form of mass transit: the school bus. The vast majority of those buses run on diesel, exposing students, teachers, and bus drivers to toxic air pollution,” said Vice President Kamala Harris.”Today, we are announcing nearly $1 billion to fund clean school buses across the nation. As part of our work to tackle the climate crisis, the historic funding we are announcing today is an investment in our children, their health, and their education. It also strengthens our economy by investing in American manufacturing and America’s workforce.”
