Volvo renames XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge

Volvo Cars is streamlining and standardising the model names of its electric cars. In future, the BEV models will be marketed under the newly introduced abbreviation EX for SUV or EC for SUV coupés. This has consequences for two of Volvo's current models.

The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric will be called the EX40 in future and the C40 Recharge Pure Electric will become the Volvo EC40 from model year 2025. With the upcoming top model EX90 and the new entry-level Volvo EX30, the new naming logic has already been implemented in the new model series. The two existing models mentioned above, which are still based on the CMA mixed platform, will now follow.

Alongside the renaming of the electric cars, the suffix ‘Recharge’, which previously labelled both the purely electric models and those with plug-in hybrid drive, has been dropped. In future, the plug-in hybrids will be recognisable by the suffix T6 or T8, which refers to the respective performance level of the engine combination.

The Volvo XC40 will remain the name for the conventionally powered compact SUV with a combustion engine (for the time being). Volvo Cars wants to become an exclusively electric car manufacturer by 2030. Last year, sales of all-electric models climbed by 70 per cent compared to 2022, accounting for 16 per cent of total global sales.

The Swedish company’s first electric van, which will only be launched in China, is known to be marketed under the name EM90. The vehicle is de facto a Volvo offshoot of the Zeekr 009, but it is not clear from the press release what the Swedes intend to call possible electric saloons or estates. Based on the current designations ‘S’ for sedans and ‘V’ for estate cars, ‘ES’ and ‘EV’ would be conceivable – but this has not been confirmed.

“By aligning our trailblazing first electric models with the rest of our electric car portfolio, we simplify choice for consumers as we continue to electrify our line-up and refresh our hybrids,” says Björn Annwall, Chief Commercial Officer and Deputy CEO at Volvo Cars.

In addition to the base models, there is also a performance software package for the recently renamed EX40 and EC40 in the variant with all-wheel drive and two motors (still referred to as “Twin Motor”), which can be selected directly as an option when ordering the vehicle. The package includes a power increase of 25 to 325 kW and a “performance driving mode”. This “also includes unique pedal mapping for quicker accelerator response and a unique ‘Performance’ drive mode to unlock the full 325kW.”

Hopefully the rebranding to EX40 & EC40 will coincide with a switch to the SEA2 platform that underpins the EX30. Bodies with Volvo’s styling built on the smart #3 size of the SEA2 would be perfect. With the announcement of EX30 production coming to Ghent in 2025 it gives me hope they will retire the dated modified ICE platform that underpins the current XC40 & C40.
