Nissan aims for Level 4 autonomous driving by 2027

Nissan wants to offer SAE Level 4 autonomous mobility services in Japan from 2027. Nissan is gaining initial practical experience with the technology with a Leaf, which will be used as part of a pilot project in Yokohama from this year.

The aim of this test phase is to gradually increase the autonomy level and evaluate customer acceptance. Further tests are planned for 2025 and 2026 in the Yokohama area with 20 vehicles with drivers still on board. From 2027, autonomous mobility services are then to be launched with several dozen vehicles in three to four Japanese municipalities.

Nissan states that it has been testing autonomous driving business models since 2017. In Japan, it was tested in the Minato Mirai area of Yokohama and Namie town, Fukushima Prefecture, where a manned mobility service called Namie Smart Mobility has been in operation since 2021. Outside Japan, Nissan has been testing autonomous-drive mobility in London and other areas with the support of the UK government.

Autonomous driving has been under development by several big industry names for some times, who have generally struggled to bring the technology to market. Apple just gave up on its ambitions to build the iCar after ten years, however, Chinese EV manufacturer Chery is taking over the development and plans to release the vehicle. Tesla had to re-address its promises surrounding its autopilot system in the US in December, for which a software update was required to prevent “foreseeable misuse.” In California, it was also found that the legal framework surrounding accidents under autonomous driving vehicles was not clear at the start of this year. Volvo is also setting up a research centre in Torslanda where the company will also look at autonomous driving technology. Kia announced plans to launch autonomous driving capacities with its next planned vehicle in 2025.
