The first Tern RC8 model is a tractor unit based on Hino’s XL Series 4×2 chassis and comes with Hexagon Purus’ zero-emission technology. The new electric truck incorporates innovative features, including proprietary battery systems, auxiliary modules, and power modules. The vehicle utilises a Hino chassis assembled in the US, Dana’s Zero-8 e-axle for optimal efficiency and battery cells from Panasonic Energy, which will initially be produced in Japan. From 2026, Panasonic plans to manufacture the battery cells in De Soto, Kansas, to ensure reliability, American origin and first-class performance.

The Tern RC8 sits on a 100 per cent battery-electric platform with a short wheelbase of 165 inches (4.2 metres). It has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 68,000 lbs (30.8 tonnes). The truck runs on two Hexagon Purus Gen3 battery packs with 269 kWh in a 750-volt and 538-kWh configuration, providing high performance and range for most duty cycles. A charging capacity of 241 kW enables an 80 per cent charge in a little less than two hours. Peak power is 680 hp, and continuous power is 494 hp.

The Tern trucks will be available exclusively through selected qualified dealers in the Tern dealer network, utilising the Hino Trucks infrastructure to ensure comprehensive support. Series production of the Tern RC8 should kick off in late 2024.

Glenn Ellis, President and CEO of Hino Trucks, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership: “Our partnership with Hexagon Purus introduces a highly reliable Class 8, 4×2 tractor option into the electric truck market, catering to a wide range of applications. We are excited to see Tern launched in California, where fleet electrification is imperative.”

“Tern RC8 delivers the comfort, reliability and safety that drivers and fleets want, and it’s purpose-built to be a very practical truck for operators integrating zero-emission trucks into their fleets,” said Morten Holum, CEO of Hexagon Purus. “We are excited to introduce a truck that embodies the endurance and efficiency of the Arctic Tern, renowned for its lightweight and long migratory journey – a trusty companion you can always rely on.”

Launching the Tern brand marks a transformative step for both companies and the commercial truck industry towards a zero-emission future without compromising on power and performance. The companies already announced their partnership in March 2023, which has now materialised with the launch of the Tern brand and the RC8 model.
