Tata Motors hopes to build India’s strongest passenger EV line-up
Discussing Tata Motors’ product plans during the Q2 FY2025 earnings conference call, Shailesh Chandra confirmed it will strengthen its EV portfolio with the Harrier.ev in Q1 2025 (January-March 2025) and the Sierra.ev in late 2025 (September-December 2025). Chandra is the Managing Director of the company’s Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) subsidiaries.
The Harrier.ev, a conversion of the diesel-powered Harrier, is likely to be one of India’s most expensive locally manufactured electric cars. Comparable to Volkswagen’s ID.4 in terms of dimensions, the five-seat compact SUV will sit on a modified version of the D8 platform, which Tata Motors borrowed from JLR and adapted for India in 2018. Tata Motors could showcase the upcoming EV in production form at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, which will take place from 17 to 22 January.
The manufacturer will position the Sierra.ev below the Harrier.ev in India’s booming segment of sub-compact SUVs measuring around 4.2-4.3 metres. Rival automakers Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, and Toyota plan to penetrate this segment the same year with the Creta EV, the e Vitara, and the production version of the Urban SUV Concept, respectively. Tata Motors already offers a coupe-styled model called Curvv.ev in this segment, but the Sierra.ev, with its blocky exterior, will appeal to a wider band of customers.
The Sierra.ev’s distinctive glasshouse, which draws inspiration from the diesel-powered 3-door Sierra that Tata Motors launched as India’s first locally developed and produced SUV in 1991, will help it stand apart in the crowded segment. The company will offer the modern-day Sierra in an ICE variant as well to expedite returns on investment and strengthen profitability.
With the launch of the Harrier.ev and Sierra.ev, Tata Motors will have a presence in every popular and emerging electric passenger car segment in India. In addition to the Curvv.ev, the company sells the Tiago.ev, Punch.ev, Tigor.ev, and Nexon.ev. The homegrown automaker dominates India’s EV sales, enjoying a 65% market share. Its current five-model EV range starts at just 7.99 lakh Indian rupees or approximately 9,000 euros. In 2026, Tata Motors hopes to achieve a new milestone, launching its first dedicated EV under a new ‘Avinya’ series, based on one of the versions of JLR’s EMA platform.
