OX Delivers expands to East Africa

UK-based electric mobility startup OX Delivers has bagged a $163 million (154 million euros) contract to establish its first franchise partner, OX East Africa. The company offers a pay-as-you-go electric truck.

OX Delivers will provide a fleet of electric trucks and give the new franchise access to its tech platform and vehicle maintenance services. The company does not rent out vehicles to customers, but space on a truck, which delivers goods from A to B. Until now, it was not possible to pay for the space ahead of time – that will now change, as OX Delivers is looking to launch a payment app.

Simon Davis, co-founder and chief executive of OX Delivers, said the contract will enable the company to explore new markets. Moreover, as EVs are cheaper to maintain and operate, transportation costs are lower – essentially making transported goods (such as food) more affordable. According to Startups Magazine, the truck is ten times cheaper to operate than existing alternatives.

Colin Tebbett will head the new OX East Africa franchise. Tebbett says the initiative demonstrates a “self-reinforcing cycle of economic and social growth within the local communities in which OX Delivers operates today.”

The company launched a pilot programme with its OX Trucks in Rwanda in 2021 and will now begin formal operations there. It will later expand to Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi. Tebbett continues: “Over the last three years, OX Delivers has significantly impacted the lives of our 5,000 customers in Rwanda. Some of our customers have seen their sales increase by five times simply by using the OX Delivers service.”

Simon Davis adds: “The huge potential our services have unlocked in Rwanda highlights the opportunity to replicate this in the neighbouring countries. Through this franchise partnership, we will expand into new markets and continue our mission to supercharge trade across the Global South.”

Former Formula One engineer Gordon Murray designed the electric OX truck in 2016. This year, OX Delivers generated more than $920,000 in revenue between January and October.
