Hyundai completes new development centre in Germany
The 25,000 square metre facility will house the Group’s largest NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) test bench to date and will feature chassis and powertrain test benches. “The facility will focus on improving EVs, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment, and electrification technologies,” Hyundai announced. The opening is scheduled for March.
The expansion of the site was announced in September 2022, and the construction work started at the end of 2023. At that time, the target date for completion was November 2024. The new building complex includes environmentally friendly materials, photovoltaic modules and heat pump systems – and is also intended to offer a modern working environment.
In addition to the large site in Rüsselsheim, Hyundai has also expanded its test centre at the Nürburgring by just over 800 square metres. The South Korean car manufacturer has had its own site at the Nürburgring since 2011, which was expanded into a fully-fledged test centre in 2013. According to Hyundai, it “pioneered durability testing” there in 2011.
“Germany remains at the heart of automotive excellence. Our investment in this powerful ecosystem reflects our confidence in the Rhine-Main region’s engineering expertise and innovative strength,” says Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director of the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre (HMETC) in Rüsselsheim. “More than that, it proves our commitment to the passionate engineers and partners who make it all happen. With our expanded facilities, we provide them with a hub for creative collaboration. They have the resources and advanced technologies they need to push boundaries and shape a more dynamic, connected future for the European automotive landscape.”
Update 11 November 2025
The Hyundai Motor Group has officially opened its €150 million test facility at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center (HMETC) in Rüsselsheim. The new “Square Campus” houses the Group’s largest semi-anechoic chamber for NVH testing, as well as a charging laboratory for electric vehicles, a driving simulator, and new facilities for advanced electronics system development, including over-the-air updates, cybersecurity and modern driver assistance systems.
“The investment at Square Campus is a clear sign of our commitment to the region and reflects the importance of Europe in our long-term growth strategy” says Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director of the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center. “The extensive new capabilities at HMETC give us more independence and flexibility, while creating exciting new opportunities for collaboration between our brands. Fundamentally, Square Campus will also support us as we continue to grow our market share in Europe, developing new vehicles and technologies designed around the needs of our customers.”
