The Hyundai Group has started construction of its new development centre in Germany. The new 25,000 square metre Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center (HMETC) building in Rüsselsheim will more than double the HMETC’s existing office and research space and should open in 2025.

The HMETC has set itself the goal of driving forward the development of electric vehicles with modern technologies. The approach also includes the development of new mobility solutions tailored to the preferences of European customers. The new laboratories will focus on technological innovations, e.g. in the areas of electrification, driver assistance systems and infotainment functions. The facilities include a test bench capable of measuring a complete range of vehicles on one platform, two chassis test benches, and a powertrain test bench.

According to the car manufacturer, the research centre should be ready for occupancy by November 2024. It will include an electrification laboratory, a workshop, a multi-purpose analysis centre, a commercial vehicle office, and a showroom. Researchers there will also work on driver assistance systems and infotainment functions.

The construction of the new research centre should support Hyundai’s transformation into a “provider of comprehensive mobility solutions” and drive the development of sustainable models and high-performance vehicles.
