Manitoba invests in 51 new charging stations

The Canadian province plans to invest $500,000 CAD (€458,000) through the Climate Action Fund to install 51 new EV chargers. They will be located in a variety of communities, ranging from rural roads to apartment blocks.

The investment was announced on April 7 by Manitoban Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes, who said it is designed to help encourage regional EV adoption.

Moyes said: “Our government is committed to taking real action to fight climate change and the transition to electric vehicles will help drive down emissions. As more Manitobans look to make the switch to electric vehicles, there is a growing need to ensure reliable charging infrastructure in strategic locations.”

39 charging stations will be installed in the cities of Brandon and Morden, as well as other ‘rural, northern and Indigenous communities’ in the province. An additional 12 charging stations will also be installed at three multi-unit residential developments.

According to a document released by Manitoba’s government, the majority of the chargers are Level 2 AC chargers, which can charge a BEV to 80% in 4-10 hours. In that regard, they are best suited for overnight charging. There are three ‘fast level 2’ chargers available, which have an output of between 20 to 49kW.

This marks the provincial government’s latest investment in EV adoption and infrastructure since August 2024, when Manitoba announced its own rebate and subsidy programme for EV purchases. Residents of the province can receive $4,000 CAD (about €2,660) when buying a new EV, or a subsidy of $2,500 (€1,667) for purchasing a second-hand EV. It applies only to vehicles worth less than €70,000 CAD. These measures are in themselves part of Manitoba’s Affordable Energy Plan, which outlined how the province aims to grow its existing hydropower-based clean energy grids and increase EV adoption.
