Montréal sets new charging infrastructure target

Montreal is planning to install 11,000 new charging points for electric cars by 2030, both on roadsides, in publicly accessible car parks and on publicly accessible private property in the greater metropolitan area.

Montréal will focus on incentives and collaborations to increase private sector participation in the provision of public charging solutions, e.g. through car parks owned by Montreal businesses such as petrol stations and grocery shops for the benefit of their employees, customers and the public.

Specifically, Montréal plans to build on three strategic pillars: installing additional municipal public charging stations; funding a programme to help Montreal businesses and institutions electrify their fleets of light and heavy vehicles; and electrifying Bixi stations, which is a public bike sharing system.

“Given that 30% of GHG emissions are caused by transport in Montreal, we want to make it easier for people to choose active mobility and electric vehicles. With a better supply of electric charging points, we want to make these mobility options more accessible and support the transition to sustainable mobility. We’re proud to be speeding up the implementation of infrastructure that will make it easier for Montrealers to adopt electric vehicles,” said Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante.
