New York City has announced the deployment of 30 additional all-electric vehicles for its Fire Department (FDNY), doubling the service’s EV presence and introducing the city’s first fully electric paramedic response units (PRUs). The new units include 11 Ford Mustang Mach-E crossovers, 13 Ford F-150 Lightning pickups, five Chevrolet Blazer EVs, and one Ford E-Transit van.

Four of the units are high-priority paramedic response vehicles. These electric PRUs are now operational in three Bronx EMS stations and will be used to enhance response times while supporting the city’s climate strategy. The investment aligns with municipal targets to reduce fleet-related emissions by 50 per cent by 2025.

According to DCAS, all 636 ambulances have been equipped with plug-in hybrid alternative power units (APUs), 350 are fitted with solar panels, and all vehicles now run on renewable diesel. A further 150 solar-equipped ambulances are currently on order.

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) has also installed the first fast-charging unit at EMS Station 18 in the Bronx to support the fleet transition. In total, FDNY now operates 33 charging ports and has 42 additional EVs in support roles.

“Fire services offer a high-impact challenge for electrification, making this investment a key ground for innovation,” states DCAS Deputy Commissioner and NYC Chief Fleet Officer Keith Kerman. “In greening FDNY’s sensitive and complex emergency equipment, we prove that we can enhance anything with sustainable and eco-friendly solutions.”

The FDNY announcement comes as part of a broader effort to triple New York’s original target of 2,000 EVs by 2025. As of May 2024, the municipal fleet surpassed 5,000 EVs, with a revised goal of reaching 6,000 by the end of 2025. Beyond EV adoption, New York’s Clean Fleet Plan includes a comprehensive shift to renewable diesel and wider use of solar and hybrid technologies across municipal services.
