Mahle SmartBike Systems is officially expanding its range to include a mid-drive for the first time, thus entering the e-mountain bike (eMTB) market. The newly introduced M40 drive system weighs 2.5 kilograms, generates up to 105 Nm of torque and a peak power of 850 W.

The German company further specifies that the M40 is the first drive system in the new M series from Mahle SmartBike Systems, which will be further expanded in the coming years to complement the existing X series with the X20, X30 and XS hub drives. The M40 drive system is available to order immediately.

The drive system includes functions such as Motor Dynamic Overrun, which reduces braking effects in the motor and enables a smoother riding experience, as well as a Hill Brake system that prevents the bike from rolling backwards when stopping on a steep incline.

A 48V battery is connected with the drive, with two options available: the 534 Wh iM5 Battery and the 800 Wh iM8 battery. The larger battery allows for a range up to 150 kilometres, or 2,500m altitude. Both batteries are interexchangeable, should the rider want to carry an additional battery along, and can be charged on a fast charger.

“Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, precision engineering and intelligent connectivity, the M40 sets new standards in the category of full-power mid-motors,” said Jochen Sommer, Managing Director of MAHLE SmartBike Systems. “With the M40 system, MAHLE SmartBike Systems is reaffirming its claim to continue driving the development of the eBike industry in the mountain bike segment.”
