Vienna to achieve fully CO2-free post deliveries by end of 2025

From the end of 2025, Austrian Post will deliver all items in Vienna exclusively on foot, by bicycle or using electric vehicles – making deliveries CO2-free. Around 700 electric vehicles are already in operation today, accounting for well over half of the nearly 1,100 vehicles deployed in Vienna.

With the complete switch to e-mobility, Vienna will become “the first European metropolis where parcels, letters, brochures, newspapers and magazines are delivered entirely CO2-free on the last mile,” according to Austrian Post. The company says it is “on the brink of a historic milestone”. Cities such as Graz, Innsbruck and Salzburg already have CO2-free deliveries – but Vienna is on a completely different scale.

Austrian Post is investing around 32 million euros in charging infrastructure and electric vehicles. In Vienna, the company operates 17 delivery bases across the city for small items such as letters, brochures, newspapers and magazines. In addition, there are three parcel delivery bases within Vienna and one site in Hagenbrunn to the north. Once fully rolled out, more than 1,500 delivery staff will be on the road CO2-free each day – though not all will use vehicles, as some will deliver on foot.

“With around 700 electric vehicles, more than half of our fleet in Vienna is already electric. By the end of the year, we will install the remaining charging stations and put a further 400 electric vehicles into operation in Vienna,” says Peter Umundum, Board Member for Parcel & Logistics at Austrian Post AG. “By the end of the year, more than two million residents will receive last-mile deliveries CO2-free – this is unique in Europe!”

This milestone now within reach in Vienna is the result of a large-scale procurement strategy: since 2022, Austrian Post has only purchased electric vehicles for delivery nationwide, adding around 1,000 new electric vehicles each year. Vehicles from a wide range of manufacturers are used, including Renault, MAN and Maxus. Currently, around 5,000 electric delivery vehicles are on Austrian roads. By 2030, the entire delivery fleet of 10,000 vehicles will be electric – meaning half the goal has now been achieved. In addition to vehicles, Austrian Post is also investing in charging points and PV systems for its own electricity generation: photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of over 18 MWp have been installed at 34 locations across Austria, covering more than 20 per cent of its electricity needs from renewable sources.

“Even in challenging times, we remain firmly on course and continue to pursue our sustainability strategy,” emphasises Walter Oblin, CEO of Austrian Post. “With the comprehensive switch to e-mobility in Vienna, our federal capital will become the first European metropolis of this size where all postal items are delivered exclusively on foot, by bicycle or electrically. This investment underlines our commitment and marks an important milestone on the path to a climate-friendly future.”
