Revamped Madrid fast charging hub now one of Spain’s largest

The fast charging park is located at Nuevos Ministerios car park and offers between 175kw and 350kW charging points. 22 of the charging bays are operated by Iberdrola and BP Pulse, with the remaining 18 being Tesla Superchargers.

The charging hub was initiated in 2020, when Porsche Ibérica and Melfosur installed two 50kW chargers for use by all EV brands. However, renovations began in May 2024, which saw the installation of the additional infrastructure, including two transformers providing 3200kW of energy capacity to the new charging towers. Porsche Ibérica has stated that the new hardware can charge a Porsche Taycan from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in approximately 18 minutes. Additional upgrades to the site include improvements to accessibility as well as automatic license plate recognition and payment through the VIA-T automated toll payment system. All energy used by the charging hub is certified to be renewable.

Nuevos Ministerios, the parking facility where the charging hub is located, is on the Paseo de la Castellana, a major route that runs from north to south through Madrid. Tomás Villén, Director General of Porsche Ibérica, commented: “This project exemplifies the joint effort of companies and institutions to ensure that the network of ultra-fast charging stations always stays ahead of demand, a key priority in Porsche Ibérica’s electrification strategy. Initiatives like this complement our efforts, alongside partners such as Iberdrola / bp pulse, Zunder, and Ionity, to promote sustainable electric mobility in Spain and Portugal.

Madrid authorities have stated that the city leads EV registrations in Spain, making up just over 50% of new EV registrations in the country. Jorge Rodrigo, Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, said the new charging location is “designed for all those citizens who, in addition to leaving their car parked, want to use the metro system from this central point, helping to improve mobility and decongest traffic.”

While the upgraded hub may be one of Spain’s largest dedicated fast charging hubs, it’s not actually the largest charging hub in the country. Another recently opened charging park in Madrid features 47 charging points, with 15 of these classed as ultra-fast, i.e. seven 350kW chargers and eight 240kW.
