Croatia promotes purchase of electric vehicles by companies with €21.2 million

The Croatian State Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency has announced that it will provide a total of €21.2 million in subsidies to companies for the purchase of zero-emission vehicles. Financial incentives range from €2,500 to €9,000 per vehicle or up to 40% of the vehicle price.

Unlike neighbouring Slovenia, which has also just introduced a new purchase subsidy for electric cars, the new subsidy programme in Croatia is not aimed at all buyers of electric vehicles, but only at commercial buyers. The Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency also appears to have larger fleets in mind, as the maximum possible subsidy per company is 90,000 euros. In addition, the subsidy programme also applies to electric buses and trucks, and not only to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes as in Slovenia.

As in a previous subsidy programme, the fund provides applicants with up to €2,500 for the purchase of vehicles in the various L categories. These range from electric mopeds (L1e-B) to microcars with up to 15 kW of power (L7e). Electric vehicles in categories M1 (cars and minibuses) and N1 (vans) are eligible for up to €9,000 per vehicle or 40% of its value. The purchase price of vehicles in class M1 and all L classes must not exceed €50,000 excluding VAT; otherwise, no subsidy is possible.

When purchasing vehicles in categories M2, M3, N2 and N3, up to 40% of the amount is co-financed. Vehicles in these categories include buses and trucks. The subsidies are available for all vehicle classes, both for electric vehicles and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

The start date of the tender will be announced at a later date. The funding round is scheduled to run until 31 May 2026. Companies involved in road haulage and taxi companies are excluded. For such companies, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition is preparing a special programme worth 45 million euros, which will be financed by the Modernisation Fund. In addition, as part of a project in which the ministry is collaborating with the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development, a further €45 million is to be invested in the decarbonisation of transport through financial instruments.
