Volvo to offer “one year free” smart EV charging

Volvo Cars is set to offer Swedish private customers one year of free electricity to charge their new EVs at home. Starting in February 2026, customers will be able to take advantage of the offer via an electricity contract with Vattenfall and the Volvo Cars app smart charging feature.

Volvo claims that, from February 2026, Swedish customers can access up to 25,000km of free electric mileage for one year. Of course, there’s caveats to this. In order to take advantage of the offer, Volvo must have an active electricity retail contract with Vattenfall (not any other energy provider), charge their Volvo BEV using the same electricity meter as the Vattenfall contract, plus use the smart charging feature on the Volvo Cars app.

That means in all likelihood the ‘free’ charging will take place at off-peak hours, with the amount of free electricity dependent on a number of factors. Looking at the small print, the actual output of ‘free’ energy largely on the customer’s specific electricity contract, the amount of energy they actually consume, and energy prices (limited to 1.5 SEK / kWh average consumption per month). In terms of the energy consumed; Volvo says it plans to cover 5,150kWh of charging per year, which it says aligns with around 25000km of range on the EX90.

In terms of signup, eligible Swedish Volvo customers will be contacted in due course with the free charging set to go live in February 2026. Volvo states that the Swedish initiative will form the basis of a wider rollout, as it plans to partner with other sustainable energy providers to scale the initiative in Europe and elsewhere.

Volvo adds that when vehicle-to-everything (V2X) capabilities become available in 2026, Volvo will introduce an offer that enables customers to use their car battery as additional energy supply for home electricity or selling energy back to the grid.

Branislav Slavic, Head of Customers & Solutions at Vattenfall Nordics, commented: “Volvo Cars adding an offer of free home charging from Vattenfall, when purchasing a new electric car, is a positive, sustainable step. Working together to encourage the use of electric cars with fossil free electricity, starting in Sweden, is incredibly inspiring.”
