50 new electric buses for Aarhus

Aarbus, the public transport operator for the Danish city of Aarhus, has just signed a contract with Solaris for the delivery of 50 Urbino 18 electric buses. The vehicles are said to hit the road in 2027.

The agreement between Aarbus and Solaris was signed on 23 October and will see the transit operator’s zero-emission bus fleet grow by 50 articulated Urbino 18s. The contract also contains provisions for a further 36 units if necessary, meaning a total of 86 new Solaris electric buses would be operating in and around Denmark’s second-largest city.

In terms of specs, the buses in question will be fitted with Solaris High Energy batteries with a total capacity of >700kWh. Deliveries are scheduled for H1 of 2027, and if the additional units are ordered, these will arrive in 2028.

In a press release, Solaris said: “Cooperation between Danish operators and Solaris dates back to 2006. To date, the manufacturer has delivered over 350 buses to the Danish market, including 100 electric vehicles, making a significant contribution to the country’s transition toward low- and zero-emission public transport. Aarhus was the first city in Denmark to introduce electric Solaris buses into regular operation.”

No word yet on whether Aarbus will expand its charging infrastructure; a number of Urbino 18 buses it purchased in 2023 are charged by cable in the Aarbus depot, with some earlier 2021 models still using a top-down pantograph. Aarhus is aiming for fossil-free public transport by 2030.
