FedEx adds 17 electric trucks to last-mile fleet in Japan

FedEx is adding 17 electric trucks to its delivery fleet in Japan, deploying them on last-mile routes in Tokyo, Kanagawa and Osaka. The move supports the company’s global electrification plans and Japan’s climate targets, with a focus on dense urban areas.

The rollout includes two Japanese-built electric light-duty trucks: the Mitsubishi Fuso eCanter and the Isuzu ELF EV. Both models offer a payload of around 1.5 tonnes and are being used for regular pickup and delivery operations. FedEx estimates that each electric truck will cut tailpipe emissions by roughly 3.3 metric tonnes per year compared with a diesel equivalent, based on the distances driven on planned routes.

“Our business strategy focuses on delivering reliable service to customers, and sustainability and efficiency are integral to how we operate,” said Kei Alan Kubota, Managing Director of FedEx Japan. “These new EVs will reduce emissions on high-density urban routes while helping us maintain the speed and quality our customers expect.”

He added: “We will continue to accelerate the adoption of low-emission technologies and contribute to cleaner air for local communities.”

For FedEx, the deployment fits into a broader plan to electrify its global pickup and delivery fleet and reach carbon-neutral operations by 2040. The move also aligns with Japan’s national climate goals, which include cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 60 per cent by 2035 compared with 2013 levels and reaching net zero by 2050. Urban freight transport is seen as a key lever in meeting those targets, particularly as e-commerce continues to drive up delivery volumes in major cities.

Alongside vehicle electrification, FedEx is also pushing digital tools aimed at improving transparency around logistics emissions. Its cloud-based FedEx Sustainability Insights platform gives customers access to historical carbon emissions data for eligible shipments across the FedEx network. According to the company, this is intended to support more informed shipping decisions and help customers assess options to reduce their environmental footprint.

With the latest additions in Japan, FedEx continues to expand its use of electric trucks in last-mile logistics, focusing on markets where zero-tailpipe-emission vehicles can be integrated into daily operations at scale.
