E.On to build ultra-fast chargers on Italian motorways

Italian motorway operator Autostrade per l'Italia (ASPI) has awarded E.ON Drive Infrastructure Italy three lots for the construction of an ultra-fast charging network along Italy's most important motorway corridors, with a total of 104 charging points.

By the end of 2026, 18 service areas on Italian motorways will be equipped with 104 ultra-fast charging points, as announced by E.ON Drive Infrastructure Italy. “We are proud to contribute, together with Autostrade per l’Italia, to the development of a reliable and accessible charging network,” states a LinkedIn post by E.On Italia.

The new charging sites will be installed “along the country’s busiest east-west and north-south routes, including the A4 (Turin–Trieste) and A14 (Bologna–Taranto) motorways,” the company explained. E.On Italia details how the 104 charging points will be distributed across the 18 service areas: “The sites will feature four to eight Alpitronic HYC400 charging stations, each with a power output of up to 400 kW per charging point.”

The locations will include canopies with photovoltaic (PV) systems and stationary battery storage to optimise the use of locally generated solar power and reduce peak loads on the grid. “Each service area is designed to provide a simple and accessible experience: fast charging, intuitive payment, transparent pricing, interoperability, and high accessibility standards,” explained E.On Italia.

“All E.ON charging stations offer the option to pay by credit or debit card—without the need for an app or subscription. Prices are clearly displayed on LED screens before charging begins and comply with European AFIR regulations,” the company states. The AFIR is particularly relevant here, as the tender by Autostrade per l’Italia aims to meet the AFIR requirement of installing fast-charging stations every 60 kilometres across the trans-European transport network. In total, the project involves charging infrastructure at 60 service areas, with E.On securing the contract for around a third of the sites.

“Winning this highly competitive tender underscores our technical expertise and commitment to accelerating the transition to electromobility in Italy,” says Michele De Gaspari, Managing Director of E.ON Drive Infrastructure Italy. “These 18 hubs will ensure reliable, user-friendly, and ultra-fast charging along some of Europe’s most important transport corridors. By integrating solar energy and storage systems at every location, we are not only building charging infrastructure but creating sustainable energy ecosystems that support the grid and deliver a high-quality charging experience for all electric vehicle drivers.”
