Gotion and BASF collaborate on solid-state batteries
Several Chinese news outlets, citing official statements from both companies, report that Gotion and BASF have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on solid-state batteries. The partnership will focus on “high-performance materials for next-generation solid-state batteries” and aims to address key technical challenges in their commercialisation. However, the companies have not disclosed further details.
In its statement on its Chinese Weibo channel, BASF remains vague, as does Gotion High-Tech in an official announcement released on Tuesday. According to the statement, the R&D collaboration will prioritise “several core materials” and innovation. Beyond research, the partnership will also explore pathways for bringing jointly developed technologies to market. For Gotion, the collaboration marks “a shift towards a more scalable and systematic approach in the development of solid-state batteries,” the company stated. Interestingly, the partners see applications not only in electric vehicles but also in stationary energy storage and “other sectors”.
The MoU was signed in Hefei, the headquarters of Gotion High-Tech. The two companies are already well-acquainted, having collaborated in other areas for years. According to CN EV Post, Gotion plans to introduce solid-state batteries in series production vehicles within the next one to two years. Against this backdrop, the company has already established a 0.2 GWh pilot production line for its so-called “Gemstone” solid-state battery. This battery boasts an energy density of 300 Wh/kg, as Gotion has repeatedly confirmed.
Gotion is, as is well known, one of China’s major battery manufacturers. According to data from South Korean market researchers SNE Research, Gotion achieved a global market share of 4.5% in 2025 with an installed battery capacity of 53.5 GWh. This placed the company fifth among the world’s leading battery manufacturers.
