Fleete opens largest commercial charging hub in the UK

Fleete has officially opened the UK’s largest dedicated commercial vehicle electric charging hub yet at the Port of Tilbury. The 5MW facility features 16 ultra-rapid chargers enabling up to 16 electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to charge simultaneously, and is operated as a shared-user model.

According to Fleete’s statements, this site is the first of a network of shared commercial vehicle charging hubs. Plan is to provide high-power charging sites at strategic logistics locations across the UK. The second site is already being worked on at Hams Hall Distribution Park near Birmingham. The new site will feature 26 charging bays, so the network is already set to grow rapidly.

The site at the Port of Tilbury features charging infrastructure delivered by Siemens, including six Flex 540kW chargers, in addition to twelve Flex 500A charging stations. Another four charging stations were supplied by Power Electronics, which are capable of delivering up to 270 kW per charging point, with an upgrade capacity to 360 kW.

The commercial charging project is financially supported by the UK government’s Thames Freeport Seed Capital Programme to a tune of £1 million, with additional funding provided by the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) Programme, funded by the Department for Transport in partnership with Innovate UK.

“Today is an important moment for Thurrock and for the wider move towards cleaner freight. The opening of Fleete’s electric HGV charging hub here at the Port of Tilbury, the largest dedicated hub of its kind in the UK, highlights what can be achieved through strong partnership between industry, government and Thames Freeport,” said Madam Mayor Sue Shinnick, Mayor of Thurrock. “This investment supports cleaner transport, improves air quality for our communities, and reinforces Thurrock’s role in adopting practical, forward looking low carbon solutions.”

“The opening of Fleete’s EV charging hub is a significant step forward for the Port of Tilbury as we work to support the decarbonisation of freight and logistics at one of the UK’s busiest ports,” added David Webster, Regional Director – Tilbury and Thames Freeport board member. “With thousands of HGV movements through the port every day, access to high-capacity, reliable charging infrastructure is critical. This shared facility will play an important role in helping our customers reduce emissions while maintaining efficient operations.”

Fleete is a fairly young company, having been founded in 2022 by Macquarie Asset Management’s Green Investments team, intended to work “at the forefront of fleet-charging innovation.” The company’s focus lies on helping businesses electrify their transport and logistics operations
