WeRide orders 2,000 additional robotaxis from Geely’s Farizon

Chinese autonomous driving technology company WeRide has ordered 2,000 units of an upgraded version of the Robotaxi GXR from commercial vehicle manufacturer Farizon, a brand of the Geely Group. The model is based on Farizon’s SuperVAN platform. The first version was unveiled by the partners in October 2024.

Currently, WeRide’s robotaxi fleet comprises over 1,000 vehicles, operating fully autonomously in Guangzhou, Beijing and Abu Dhabi, as well as in Dubai, Riyadh and Singapore in test operations with a safety driver. The foundation for this is the GXR, a van introduced in October 2024, which is based on the SuperVAN platform (now: Farizon SV) from Geely’s commercial vehicle brand Farizon. It uses over 20 sensors, including LiDAR sensors, high-resolution high-dynamic cameras and a high-precision RTK inertial navigation system.

WeRide and Farizon have now agreed to launch an updated generation of the GXR. WeRide has ordered 2,000 units of the model for delivery this year, with the aim of expanding its robotaxi fleet to over 2,600 units. According to WeRide’s press release, this represents ‘steady progress toward its vision of tens of thousands of vehicles by 2030.’

“This deepened strategic collaboration between WeRide and Geely Farizon marks our shift from a product-level partnership to an integrated ecosystem, and is a significant milestone in WeRide’s global Robotaxi deployment. By combining technological leadership with high-efficiency mass production, we will accelerate commercial rollout of the Robotaxi GXR across key markets, including China, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe – delivering safer, more reliable, and more accessible autonomous mobility worldwide,” said Dr. Tony Han, Founder and CEO of WeRide.

Production of the updated model is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026. It will be equipped with WeRide’s latest autonomous driving system, named GEN8. GEN8 is based on WeRide’s self-developed Sensor Suite 8.0 and enhances vehicle safety, reliability and long-term operational security. Its thousand-line LiDAR increases point cloud resolution by 17 times and extends the detection range to 600 metres—according to WeRide, this is two to three times the range of common industry solutions.

“Our partnership with WeRide is not only a precise integration of technology and resources, but also a clear example of Farizon’s strategic transformation from manufacturing to providing comprehensive ‘intelligent manufacturing + services’ solutions. Moving forward, leveraging Farizon’s leading R&D capabilities, standardised intelligent manufacturing, and smart assembly capacity, we will establish a highly reliable and adaptable intelligent manufacturing foundation for the mass production and delivery of the purpose-built GXR model, providing strong support for the large‑scale deployment of L4 autonomous driving technology,” said Mike Fan, CEO of Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group.
