Enel installs over 3,700 new charging points in Italy

Enel has installed 3,730 new charging stations in Italy, completed as part of the country's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Enel aims to increase this number to approximately 5,000 charging stations through two additional PNRR tenders in the future.

The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) is Italy’s central investment and reform programme, funded by EU resources to revitalise the economy in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. PNRR funds remain available this year. One of the projects supported by the government in Rome is the development of a national network of charging stations.

Enel, Italy’s largest electricity provider, is one of the major beneficiaries of these government-funded projects. The Rome-based group recently announced the completion of 3,730 charging stations under the first government-issued PNRR tender. These are spread across five regions—Campania, Lazio, Lombardy, Apulia, and Sicily—as well as 21 provinces. A total of 298 funded stations are located in the province of Naples, 227 in the province of Milan, 111 in the province of Bari, 112 in the province of Catania, and 396 in the province of Rome. Each charging station features two charging points, delivering up to 90 kW per connection. Access is provided via Enel’s app or card, though the chargers can also be used through around 160 mobility service providers.

Meanwhile, Enel has also secured contracts for an additional 1,200 charging stations under the second and third PNRR tenders. Once these are operational, Enel will have installed around 5,000 charging stations under PNRR funding across nine regions: Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Apulia, and Sicily. “Approximately 40 per cent of the installations are located in southern Italy,” the company emphasises.

Enel’s market dominance is further highlighted by the fact that the Enel Group has, according to its own figures, secured 50 per cent of the contracts awarded so far in the three PNRR tenders for ‘charging infrastructure in urban contexts.’ In addition to funding for urban charging stations, the government is also supporting the development of chargers along motorways through the PNRR.

“These figures confirm Enel’s leadership in electric mobility, a pillar of the company’s energy transition strategy,” the company states. The goal is ‘to support a sustainable, digital transport ecosystem accessible to all citizens and businesses who choose to travel electric.’
