Chinese automotive brand MG Motor has announced an electric SUV variant of its MG4 Urban: the MG 4X. The design of the new model has now been unveiled, alongside some technical details revealed as part of the Chinese homologation process.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) catalogue, the MG 4X is a compact SUV measuring 4.50 metres in length, 1.85 metres in width, and 1.62 metres in height. Its wheelbase spans 2.74 metres. The kerb weight ranges between 1,640 and 1,755 kg, while the permissible gross weight varies from 2,076 to 2,191 kg, depending on the equipment variant.

The entry-level version of the MG 4X features a synchronous permanent-magnet motor with a peak output of 125 kW. MG Motor has also submitted homologation documents for a more powerful variant, which boasts a 150 kW synchronous permanent-magnet motor.

Like the recently introduced MG4 Urban, the MG 4X is based on the E3 platform and uses front-wheel drive. In contrast, the classic MG4 EV is built on the MSP platform and employs rear-wheel drive. Initially, MG Motor launched the new MG4 Urban simply as the ‘new MG4’ before adding the ‘Urban’ designation. The company even updated the original MG4, allowing both models to coexist. However, the MG4 Urban is not yet available in Germany.

The MG 4X’s battery options are already known: like the MG4 Urban, the electric SUV will be available with an optional semi-solid-state battery. This manganese-based battery system, which offers a range of 510 km under the CLTC standard, contains only 5% liquid electrolyte. This design is said to significantly improve thermal stability and cold-weather performance. Alternatively, conventional LFP batteries will also be offered, though their capacity has not yet been disclosed.

For its driver assistance system, MG has partnered with Horizon Robotics, a company that is also one of Volkswagen’s partners in China. The MG 4X is equipped with the “Navigate on Pilot” (NOA) navigation system and automated parking functions, which MG claims deliver the best driving experience in its price segment.
