Targeted thefts force HPC charging stations offline near Naples

Multiple HPC charging stations in the Naples region have gone offline following a series of targeted thefts. According to local reports, unknown perpetrators dismantled charging equipment at several locations operated by Enel X Way and removed key internal components.

Reports from EV drivers and online charging communities indicate that the incidents affected sites in Naples, Chiaiano, Mugnano, Marano, Villaricca and Giugliano. The perpetrators reportedly accessed the charging cabinets and extracted internal power modules used for high-power charging.

Industry observers say the attacks differ significantly from typical cases involving damaged cables or copper theft. Removing the so-called ‘power stacks’ from HPC systems requires technical knowledge of high-voltage infrastructure as well as specialised tools. The stolen modules are central to the operation of fast-charging systems and enable the delivery of high charging capacities.

Several affected charging locations are expected to remain unavailable for weeks or months, further reducing fast-charging availability in the region.

The incidents have also prompted questions about possible resale channels for specialised charging hardware. According to reports, dismantling industrial-grade charging systems without damaging the equipment or causing serious safety risks would require a high level of expertise.
