Gridserve opens Electric Super Hub at Moto Tamworth
Of the 32 charging bays, 24 are designed for passenger vehicles, including three accessible bays. The remaining eight bays are located in a dedicated area for larger electric vehicles such as extended-wheelbase vans, electric coaches, heavy goods vehicles and tow cars pulling caravans or trailers.
The passenger car charging area features chargers capable of delivering up to 360 kW. According to the company, compatible vehicles can add up to 100 miles (161 kilometres) of range in less than ten minutes. Gridserve added that the site operates using net-zero energy and supports contactless payment.
For larger vehicles, the company has implemented a drive-through charging layout equipped with 350 kW chargers positioned on both sides of the charging lanes. The arrangement is designed to accommodate different charging-port locations and allow vehicles towing caravans or trailers to remain coupled while charging.
According to Gridserve, the hub is powered by a new 14 MVA primary substation, which the company says is capable of supplying enough electricity for a large town. The project also included the installation of new 33 kV cable infrastructure linking the site to the electricity network.
The charging infrastructure was delivered through collaboration between Gridserve, Moto Hospitality, Distribution Network Operator National Grid Electricity Distribution and independent distribution network operator Last Mile. While the UK government’s Green Recovery Fund supported the installation of the cable infrastructure, the primary substation and associated electrical infrastructure were jointly funded by Gridserve and Moto.
“Today’s opening represents far more than the launch of another EV charging hub,” said Daniel Kunkel, CEO of Gridserve. “It demonstrates the scale of investment needed to support the UK’s transition to electric transport and shows how effective a stable policy framework can be in unlocking private sector investment.”
He added: “The ZEV mandate has given businesses like Gridserve the confidence to plan and invest in critical infrastructure across the UK. Having that certainty is essential for projects like Moto Tamworth, which require significant upfront investment and long-term commitment.”
Ken McMeikan, Chief Executive Officer of Moto Hospitality, added: “We are committed to providing customers with market-leading EV charging facilities across our motorway service areas. Our continued partnership with Gridserve is helping to create the charging network drivers need today, while ensuring our sites are ready for the increasing demand we’ll see in the years ahead.”
