Rivian raises 2026 delivery forecasts after production exceeds expectations
Rivian has provided a brief update on its production and delivery figures for the past quarter. According to the announcement, the company manufactured 12,613 EVs at its plant in Normal, Illinois, USA, between April and June – and delivered exactly 12,194 units. These figures significantly surpass the statistics from the first quarter of 2026, when 10,236 vehicles were built and 10,365 were delivered.
However, it remains unclear whether the initial deliveries of its highly anticipated R2 model are included in these numbers. The compact electric car, designed as a high-volume model, has been delivered since mid-June. As Rivian does not break down its statistics by individual model series, it is unknown whether significant volumes of the R2 contributed to the strong Q2 performance. The company merely notes “robust growth quarter-over-quarter in EDV and R1 coupled with the introduction of R2 deliveries.”
What is clear, however, is that Rivian anticipates a sharp increase in sales for the second half of the year now that the R2 is part of its lineup. This is evident when combining the Q1 and Q2 figures: together, they total 22,849 vehicles produced and 22,559 delivered in the first half of the year. Even based on Rivian’s previous annual target for 2026 of 62,000 to 67,000 deliveries, at least 40,000 vehicles would still need to be delivered in the second half of the year.
Rivian has now announced that, based on the Q2 results, it expects to deliver between 65,000 and 70,000 vehicles this year. The company originally anticipated only 9,000 to 11,000 deliveries for the second quarter. With the revised target, the desired sales volume for the second half of the year increases to nearly 43,000 to 48,000 vehicles.
Rivian will, as usual, publish its financial results for the second quarter in a few weeks. The company has scheduled 30 July for the release of these figures and a related live webcast. One thing is certain: Rivian urgently needs improved financial performance. For the US manufacturer, 2025 was a challenging year. With 42,247 electric vehicles delivered, it experienced an 18 per cent decline compared to 2024. Revenue from vehicle sales correspondingly fell by 15 per cent to 3.83 billion US dollars. The fact that Rivian still managed to increase its total revenue by eight per cent to nearly €5.4 billion USD was solely due to its software deal with Volkswagen. Ultimately, the company recorded a net loss of €3.6 billion USD for 2025.
