Thailand: Energy Absolute unveils electric car

Thailand’s second-biggest provider electricity Energy Absolute has formed an EV subsidiary, Mine Mobility, and unveiled its first passenger electric car at this year’s Bangkok Motor show. Now the company has already received more than 4,500 orders.

Poland to build own EV brand for domestic market

The Polish company ElectroMobility Poland (EMP), a joint venture of the four state-owned energy companies Tauron, Enea, Energa and PGE, has announced the development of three versions of a compact electric car for the Polish market. The first versions will be released in 2022 or 2023.

Fox plans to revive Mia electric car with Lion battery

Swiss manufacturer Fox Automotive has commissioned the battery system developer, Lion Smart, to make a “light” battery to fit their EV series, Mia. According to Fox, a fully automated production line for the model already exists and the new component is expected to be included by spring 2019.

EV target missed.

President Barack Obama’s goal of 1 million EVs by 2020 seems a long stretch, as currently only 400,000 plug-in vehicles run on American roads. In 2015, a total of 115,000 plug-ins were registered, down from the 120,000 units sold in the year prior.

EV registrations in Norway.

Some 17.1 percent of all in 2015 newly registered cars in Norway were all-electric. That translates to around 26,000 new EVs compared to a total of 150,700 new vehicles on the road. Not bad.

EV registrations in Europe.

Exactly 28,360 electric vehicles were registered in Europe in Q3 of this year; an increase of 62.2 percent compared to the same period in 2014 (17,488 units). According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), the demand for hybrids also grew 34.7%, reaching a total of 53,183 units.

EV registrations in France.

In France, 12,613 electric vehicles were newly registered in the first eight months of this year. That is a 55 percent YOY increase. Among passenger cars, the Renault Zoe continues to hold the top spot. 1,023 units were sold in July and August 2015 alone.

Plug-in production in China.

China put out 9,175 electric cars last month, thus quadrupling production compared to the same month last year. Production of plug-in hybrids tripled as 6,778 units left local facilities. Commercial EVs saw the biggest jump to 6,446 units – 21 times more than in August 2014.

Plug-in sales in the UK.

The UK again saw a 28.6% increase in electric car sales, as 301 units rolled off dealership lots last month. Furthermore, SMMT counted 578 newly registered plug-in hybrids on the Isles this August – up 105.7% compared to the same month last year.

Car sales in the U.S.

In August, EV sales dropped 23.4 percent to 5,224 units compared to August 2014 in the United States. Plug-in hybrid sales even fell 36% to 3,786 units sold, while 37,633 pure hybrids rolled of the lot – a nearly 22% decrease compared to the same period last year. The reasons are low petrol prices and the fact, that the 2016 models will soon be available.

Registrations in the UK.

A total of 420 purely electric cars were newly registered in the UK in July, down 16 percent compared to same month last year. Plug-in hybrid soared 95 percent, on the other hand – 1,169 PHEVs were registered in the UK in July 2015, compared to 599 units in July 2014.

EV, PHEV and hybrid sales decrease.

Just 5,143 electric cars found buyers last month in the USA. Compared to July 2014 that is an decrease of 13.3 percent. The silly season also took its toll on hybrids, where sales dropped almost 20% (35,666 units sold) and even plug-in hybrids (3,836 sold; -33,2%).

Reading tip: EV myth-buster Eric Schaal look at recent studies suggesting that the cleanliness of EVs depends on their location. He particularly takes issue as the findings are published in a manner that seems to indicate that e-cars are actually more pollutant than petrol-powered ones.

EV sales in the U.S.

In the U.S., 32,330 hybrids, 3,409 plug-in hybrids, and 6,975 EVs were sold in June. The number of BEV increased compared to the same period last year, whiles sales of hybrids and PHEVs dropped. The best-selling BEVs were the Tesla Model S (2,800), the Nissan Leaf (2,074) and the BMW i3 (551).

Newly registered EVs in Norway.

A cracking 18.4 percent of newly registered cars in Norway were electric in the first half of 2015. Of a total of 13,659 EVs sold, the e-Golf took a market share of 35.4 percent (4,829 units) followed by Tesla (2,674) and the Nissan Leaf (1,611). 2,617 EVs were sold in June alone.
