10,000 tonne container ship hits the waters in China
The electric container ship is currently undergoing extensive sea trials in the area off Shanghai. The electricity for the electric technology is supplied by charged battery containers. A photovoltaic system is also installed on the ship, designed to provide extra renewable power during operations, however, the manufacturer has not specified its capacities.
The ship is powered by the up to ten battery boxes on board. which offer a total capacity of up to 19,000 kWh. They, in turn, supply power to two 875 kW permanent magnet drive motors, which then propel the ship. The batteries can be charged using powerful shore power connections or by replacing the container units in a huge battery swapping system.
According to the manufacturers, it is also equipped with “autonomous navigation functions in open waters, including real-time monitoring around the vessel, all-weather visual perception, route planning, unmanned operation features, and autonomous collision avoidance.”
Once completed, the Ning Yuan Dian Kun will be operated by Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd., which operates feeder routes linked to the Ningbo-Zhoushan port. A sister ship is also planned, which is to be named the Ning Yuan Dian Peng, and ill follow later.
The Ning Yuan Dian Kun was initially launched for small-scale tests in September last year, and completed mooring tests over January. Now, the electric container ship has received approval to begin sea trials, which are now kicking off.
This marks the second major shipping electrification project in China, which had also launched an electric container ship on the Yangtze River last year. The Greenwater 01 was developed by the China Ocean Shipping Group (Cosco) and is 120 metres long and 24 metres wide. It has a battery capacity of 50,000 kWh, which can be expanded to up to 80,000 kWh if required.
