Seat has acquired the Spanish ride-share startup Respiro, which is currently operating in Madrid with about 200 vehicles, including electric and hybrid ones. The plan is to expand the ride-share company to further major cities in the coming years.

The takeover represents Seats first steps in the ride sharing economy. It also establishes the VW company’s new focus on the southern European market, where they want to present themselves as a dedicated mobility provider. Further details regarding the arrangement with Respiro will be announced at the Mobile World Congress on February, 26 in Barcelona.

Respiro is a ride-share startup that began in 2010, and currently has around 15,000 active customers. The company is said to have made a turnover of around 1.8 million euros in 2016.

A year ago, Seat also surprised with an announcement at the Mobile World Congress where it presented a fully electric version of their Mii that is expected by 2019.
