BYD has received an order to supply 64 electric buses to Medellín, Colombia’s second largest city. The electric buses are to be delivered to the local public transport operator Metroplús during the second half of 2019.

The delivery would make BYD the company behind the largest fleet of electric buses in Colombia and the second largest fleet in Latin America. The order is only smaller than the orders for BYD and Yutong for 100 electric buses each for Santiago de Chile last year.

Metroplús purchased a total of 64 of the 12.5 meter long K9G electric buses. Each of these BYD buses can carry up to 80 passengers. Each electric bus is expected to cover around 300 kilometres per day. The charging time per bus is calculated at two hours per day. A network of charging stations will be installed throughout the city to help facilitate the charging process.
