Polish municipal association orders 32 Solaris buses

The Polish municipal association Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia (GZM) has ordered 32 electric buses and the associated charging infrastructure from Solaris. The 12- and 18-meter-long Urbino electric are to be used by operators from Gliwice, Katowice, Sosnowiec, Świerklaniec from 2023.

GZM has ordered a total of 27 Urbino 12 electric solo buses and five Urbino 18 electric articulated buses. The charging infrastructure provided for in the contract consists of eleven pantograph chargers and 16 plug-in chargers. The ordered vehicles will be equipped with Solaris high-energy batteries with a total capacity of 250 kWh in the case of the Urbino 12 electric and 400 kWh for the Urbino 18 electric. Traction motors are integrated into the drive axle of both models. There is room for at least 80 passengers inside the Urbino 12 and at least 115 in the Urbino 18 electric.

GZM is an association of 41 cities and municipalities, according to Wikipedia. According to the report, it has about 2.3 million inhabitants and is located on the border between the industrial region of Upper Silesia and the Dombrowa coal basin.

It was only at the end of January that Solaris was able to record its largest single order to date, worth a total of around 100 million euros. Norwegian transport operator Unibuss ordered 183 Solaris Urbino 18 articulated electric buses from the Polish bus manufacturer for use in Oslo. An agreement was already signed in the middle of the month. The new buses are scheduled to enter service in April 2023.
