Tesla plans to build more models in Germany

Following the start of deliveries of the first Model Y Performance produced in the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, Tesla plans to gradually expand production. New paint colours will soon follow, and later more models will be built in Germany, according to Elon Musk.

The vehicles delivered on Tuesday were all black-painted Model Y Performance. According to various social media posts by customers, white vehicles will also be delivered soon – this step was also indicated by the delivery times in Tesla’s configurator.

However, the configurator still lists the familiar colours “Pearl White Multi-Coat”, “Solid Black”, “Midnight Silver Metallic”, “Deep Blue Metallic” and “Red Multi-Coat”. But these will not be launched on the market in this form, as Teslamag reports with reference to statements made by Elon Musk at the opening of the plant. “In a few months”, the paint finish in a special “Crimson Red” is to be available for the Model Y first and then a silver tone. This had also been hinted at, but had not yet been confirmed in this form.

While some Model Y interested parties had rather hoped for statements on the production of other motorisations of the E-SUV in Grünheide (such as a Long Range or the basic model with LFP battery and rear-wheel drive), Musk gave an outlook on the more distant future. In the longer term, Tesla will produce “a number of exciting vehicles” at the German factory, Musk said.

Of course, this suggests that initially it will be the Model 3, which is closely related to the Model Y, but other models are not ruled out. Once the battery factory in Grünheide is up and running, stationary energy storage systems such as the Powerwall and Megapacks for Europe will also be produced there.

However, Musk did not make any precise statements about when further models will be added to production. He only said that the production capacity for the Model Y must first be increased so much that it exceeds demand.
