VW to begin ID.4 production in May

VW plans to start series production of the ID.4 at the Emden plant in May. The carmaker made the announcement after a visit to the site by VW brand CEO Ralf Brandstätter, his successor Thomas Schäfer and the chairperson of the general works council Daniela Cavallo.

According to a dpa report, the information is based on statements made to reporters during the visit at the end of last week. Volkswagen has not confirmed the start of series production. Pre-series production of the ID.4 had already started in November 2021 in Emden.

Brandstätter himself published pictures of the visit on LinkedIn. Also present was Thomas Schäfer, who was appointed Chief Operating Officer of the VW brand with effect from 4 April. Schäfer is currently still CEO of Skoda and will succeed Brandstätter as VW brand chief in July when he takes over the group’s activities in China.

“The Emden plant with its 8,000 employees is our first plant in #LowerSaxony to be fully converted to electric car production,” Brandstätter said. “The training and further education of our team is already in full swing. Another important location for our electric strategy and on the #WayToZero!”

After Zwickau, where the ID.4 is already being built, Emden will be the second MEB plant in Germany and the third in Europe – besides the Skoda Enyaq and its coupé offshoot are built in Mlada Boleslav. The ID.4 is to be followed in Emden by an electric sedan in Passat format and later also an estate. The concept will be called the ID.Vizzion, the estate the ID.Space Vizzion. The name of the production model, however, is ID.6.

Ordered a ID.4 PRO AWD in may of 2021, last email in early March said delayed due to wiring harness supply issues from Ukraine. Hopefully they can deliver before the end of 2022 cause I’ll be moving on if not.

I've been waiting ages for my ID.4 Pro Max. They keep pushing back my production date each month and it's very frustrating. I have both chip and harness reasons for the delay. I'm considering cancelling my order as well, as the Nissan Ariya is more readily available.
