Volkswagen scraps plans for a second battery factory in Lower Saxony
According to a media report, Volkswagen currently sees no chance of realising a second battery cell factory in Lower Saxony, Germany. Lower Saxony’s Minister President Stephan Weil spoke out in favour of a second cell factory in Emden – but was outvoted in the supervisory board because of the costs involved.

VW ID.4 production kicks off in Emden
The VW ID.4 is now also being produced in Emden. This means that the ID.4 is now built at the German sites in Zwickau and Emden as well as in the Chinese plants in Anting and Foshan. From autumn this year, production for the US market will start in Chattanooga.

VW to begin ID.4 production in May
VW plans to start series production of the ID.4 at the Emden plant in May. The carmaker made the announcement after a visit to the site by VW brand CEO Ralf Brandstätter, his successor Thomas Schäfer and the chairperson of the general works council Daniela Cavallo.

VW launches pre-series production of the ID.4 in Emden
The conversion of the Emden site into Lower Saxony’s first plant for electric cars is on the home straight, according to VW. The first pre-series vehicles of the ID.4 are already being produced in the body shop, the paint shop and soon in assembly. Volume production is scheduled to start in spring 2022.

VW to upgrade Emden factory over summer break
Volkswagen has announced that it will be pushing ahead with a number of construction projects at the Emden site during the upcoming plant holiday. More than 1,000 employees and external workers are to work on around 300 construction sites between 2 and 27 August for the transformation to an EV production site.

Volkswagen’s Emden factory on time for BEV production
VW has provided an update on the conversion of the Emden plant for the production of MEB electric cars, which started in July 2020. Completion is scheduled for the first half of 2022, with EV volume production to begin with the ID.4. VW has also confirmed other models, including an electric estate.

2,200 robots for automation at VW plants

VW to manufacture small electric car in Eastern Europe
Volkswagen’s plans for future plants are changing rapidly: from 2023, the purely electric small car for less than 20,000 euros is to be built in Eastern Europe instead of in Emden in Germany as originally planned. The Zwickau plant in Germany will probably hand over the production of the I.D. Crozz to Emden.

VW confirms electric vehicle plants in Emden & Hanover
Volkswagen will be investing a total of 44 billion euros in future technologies by 2023 with about 3/4 of the money reserved for e-mobility alone. In accordance with the Boards latest priority, VW now confirmed their facilities in Emden and Hanover as new EV plants that will utilise the MEB platform.
