Nissan starts production of the Qashqai and Juke in Sunderland
As the Nissan Qashqai and Juke combustion model production in Sunderland passes the five million mark, hybrid-electric versions of these SUVs models are now rolling off the lines in the factory in the UK.
The Qashqai e-Power and Juke Hybrid have now officially gone into production in Sunderland. Built alongside the Nissan Leaf, every model built by Nissan in the UK now has an electrified version. This is the result of bundling and investment by both Nissan, as well as its suppliers in the Sunderland area. While Nissan still maintains close production ties to the mainland, such as with Renault in France, these connections are not necessarily carved in stone.
“With more than five million customers, Qashqai and Juke are two of our plant’s most successful and popular models ever,” said Alan Johnson, Nissan’s Vice President for Manufacturing in the UK, adding: “Both e-POWER and hybrid technologies are firsts for the team in Sunderland, so it’s fantastic to see the electrified versions rolling off our two production lines.”
This is an important step in the ramp up to reach Nissan’s goal of developing only electrified vehicles in Europe starting next year, as the Sunderland plant will manufacture the new electric flagship model ‘EV36Zero’.
