Magna produces battery cases for new General Motors EV

Magna will supply battery enclosures to the new Chevrolet Silverado EV, said to hit the read in 2024. Production of the battery cases will begin later this year at the Magna Electric Vehicle Structure facility in St. Clair, Michigan, US.

Battery enclosures protect critical battery components from impact, heat or water and house the high-voltage battery, as well as electrical components, sensors and connectors. Depending on the need of the customer, Magan can build enclosures in steel, aluminium, or other lightweight, multi-material configurations.

In October last year, Magna announced that it is investing more than 500 million dollars in two new production sites in the US and the expansion of its St. Clair factory. The latter opened in 2021 and has been the production site for battery cases for the GMC Hummer EV. Since GM remains an important customer, as this new agreement goes to show, and will step up production of electric vehicles, it makes sense for Magna to create more capacity.

The new plants in Shelby Township and Detroit, both located in Michigan, will be for the production of powertrains and seats. The former is said to open in March of this year.
