Honda to sell only electric vehicles in China from 2035

At the Shanghai Auto Show, Honda announced plans that it will only sell electric cars in China by 2035. The Japanese carmaker also provided a preview of new electric models to be launched on the Chinese market next year.

Honda’s new electric vehicle offerings will start with the new e:NP2 and e:NS2 electric cars, shown as prototypes, which will complement the e:NP1 and e:NS1 models already available in China from early 2024. Like the first two Honda battery-electric cars for the Chinese market, the two new models are two variants of the same model, which will be distributed by the joint ventures Dongfeng Honda and GAC Honda, respectively. Honda is also presenting the e:N SUV as a concept vehicle, the production model of which is to be launched on the Chinese market before the end of 2024.

In total, Honda is planning ten BEV models in China by 2027. As reported, the Japanese company wants to launch a total of 30 electric models on the global market by 2030 and then achieve a sales volume of more than two million electric vehicles per year.

In very general terms, Honda says that e:NP2 and e:NS2 represent the “second round” of electric cars in China and that the concept is to further develop the e:N triad of “dynamics, intelligence and beauty”. In terms of intelligence, they are to be equipped with the Honda Connect 4.0 system, for example. The design guideline is the combination of “the excellent utility of SUVs with the sleek form of sedans”.

As a third concept vehicle, Honda is also presenting the e:N SUV in Shanghai, the production model of which is to be launched on the Chinese market “before the end of 2024”. This will be the first representative of “the e:N architecture W developed exclusively for the EV models of the e:N series”, the Japanese say, but do not give any further details. The “third round” model is to feature the latest safety and driver assistance systems and an AI-supported version of the Connect technologies.

With the introduction of these models announced for 2024, Honda wants to pave the way to selling 100 per cent electric cars in China by 2035. In total, Honda plans ten BEV models there by 2027. Interestingly, a teaser image that has now been published shows an electric sedan called the e:N GT Concept, but Honda does not provide any information about it in the announcement itself.
